Choosing foam and filling starts with the job. Upholstery foam provides support and shape, cushion inserts create softer scatter cushions, and Dacron or fibre can add loft and soften the finished result. Browse the products above, or use the guidance below if you are unsure where to start.
Choosing upholstery foam
For replacement sofa, chair or bench cushions, consider the cushion thickness, how often it will be used and the feel you prefer. Density and firmness describe different foam properties, so a higher-density foam is not automatically firmer.
Our foam grades guide explains how to compare the available grades. If you need a custom shape or size, use the foam cut-to-size calculator to enter your dimensions and application.
Measure the cushion before ordering
Measure the cushion cover rather than copying old foam that may have compressed, spread or shrunk. Remove the existing insert, close the cover and measure seam to seam without stretching the fabric.
Follow the complete cushion cover measuring guide, then read how to choose foam thickness. Thickness affects how quickly a cushion reaches the supporting surface underneath, so it should be considered together with the foam grade.
Finishes and specialist foam
Dacron wrap can soften the edges of a foam cushion, reduce friction inside the cover and create a fuller upholstered finish. It does not replace the support provided by the foam. Compare the options in our Dacron wrap and foam overlay guide.
Closed-cell products such as EVA, PE and IXPE serve different applications, including padding, flotation, packaging and insulation. See the closed-cell foam guide before choosing one for an upholstery or outdoor project.
