🪑 Why Cushion Foam Quality Matters
When it comes to furniture, comfort is everything. But not all foam cushions are created equal.
Cheap foam may feel fine at first — but after a short time, it compresses, loses shape, and becomes unsupportive. That's why understanding foam density, hardness, and grade is so important.
📌 Foam Grade, Density & Firmness – What's the Difference?
Density
Foam density is measured in kilograms per cubic metre. The higher the number, the more foam you're getting (and the longer it will last). For example, a high density foam like N31 will hold its shape far better over time than a lower-density alternative.
Firmness (Hardness)
Firmness is measured in Newtons and refers to how soft or firm the foam feels. A higher number means a firmer cushion — but it doesn’t necessarily mean higher quality. Always look at density + firmness together.
Foam Grade Codes (e.g. N31-190)
- First number = Density
-
Second number = Hardness
So, N31-190 means medium density (31) with firm feel (190).
💡 Which Foam is Right for My Application?
Different applications need different types of foam:
| Use | Recommended Foam |
|---|---|
| Seat cushions | Medium to high-density foam (e.g. N31) |
| Back cushions | Softer, lower density options |
| Caravan / camper beds | High resilience foam with support |
| Daybeds / lounges | Custom cut foam to fit exactly |

Choosing Foam for Cushions FAQs
Not always. Foam firmness (measured in Newtons) tells you how soft or hard it feels, but quality is determined by both firmness and density combined.
Medium to high-density foams like N31 are ideal for seat cushions. They offer the support and durability needed for everyday use.
The first number (31) is the density, and the second number (190) is the firmness. So N31-190 is medium density with a firm feel.
