Short answer: Use crumbed foam for bean bags, floor cushions and loose back cushions where the filling is meant to move and be reshaped inside the cover.
Do not use it for a sofa or chair seat that needs straight edges and even support. That job needs solid foam cut to size. For a lighter, softer scatter cushion or back cushion, polyester fibre is usually a better fit.

Why choose crumbed foam?
Crumbed foam gives bean bags and loose cushions a fuller, heavier and more cushioned feel. The flexible foam pieces move inside the cover and can be shaken or plumped back into shape when needed.
Where crumbed foam works best
Best for
Bean bags, floor cushions, loose back cushions and topping up a project that already uses crumbed foam.
Choose something else for
Seats and cushions that must keep straight edges or even support, very light pillows and covers where a pet can reach the loose filling.
Crumbed foam vs EPS beads vs solid foam
Crumbed foam is our recommended loose filling when comfort, fullness and a more substantial feel matter. It can settle with use, but it can be shaken or plumped back into shape.
EPS beads create the familiar lightweight bean bag feel, but they gradually squash down with use. As they lose volume, the bean bag becomes flatter and needs topping up. Their static also makes refilling and cleaning up spills difficult. Choose beads when keeping the bean bag as light as possible is the priority.
Solid foam is the right option for sofa seats, dining chairs and cushions that need straight edges, consistent support and a defined shape. It must be cut to the correct size, thickness and firmness.
For lighter back cushions and pillows, polyester fibre is another option.
What happens to our foam offcuts?
Crumbed foam and shredded foam are two names for the same loose filling. We put suitable clean, unused offcuts from our own cutting work through our crumbing machine here in Chester Hill.
The finished mix varies in colour and firmness. The video shows the machine in action; the photos show the filling being packed and stored.
How much crumbed foam should I order?
Each bag contains approximately 5 kg of crumbed foam, or around 300 litres when loose and uncompressed. The amount needed will vary depending on the shape of the cover, whether it already contains filling and how full or firm you want the finished project to feel.
For a new bean bag, check whether the cover manufacturer provides a recommended filling volume. For top-ups, add the crumbed foam gradually and test the feel as you go. Existing filling may already be compressed, so it is not a reliable guide to the amount of new filling required.
For unusually large projects, contact our team before ordering.
Filling your cover
Use a strong inner liner with a secure closure. Add the foam gradually in a contained area, then close the liner and test the feel before adding more. Keep loose filling away from children and pets.
